Review.....
I just read through Frank Gerryt's ebook "The Lazy Student's Guide to Success," and I must say I am rather impressed. I had expected to find some tips on improving my study habits, and instead I found a rather comprehensive guide on what I need to do to be a more effective student in essentially all areas of study.
I have no doubt that even accomplished students can use this guide to bolster their weaknesses and improve their strengths. For instance, I'm pretty good with my memory and with motivation, but my weaknesses are all definitely in the area of organization and habits. Furthermore, I could add in entirely new ideas, like the magic button and mind mapping to round out my study abilities.
Homeschoolers in particular stand to benefit from this ebook. I wish I had read it before I started my college career. Frank covers things like note taking, essay writing and even public speaking. Starting college after having been homeschooled for so long, I was basically thrown straight into the fire and had to learn by trial and error. Needless to say, learning public speaking skills through trial and error is not a very pretty sight.
The ebook reads pretty quickly, and is livened up with interesting quotations and examples. The writing is clear and precise, and it should be very much accessible down to students in junior high school and even potentially those even younger.
To offer some unbiased judgment, I tried pretty hard to come up with some criticisms. The only thing I could think of that Frank could add in would be a small section on working in a lab and science experiments. However, that's rather nitpicky and the other sections are probably entirely applicable to lab work and studying for lab tests. My only other criticism is that if a student were to read and apply the ideas presented in the book, that student could hardly be considered lazy. The ebook might be more aptly named "The User's Guide to Turning a Lazy Student into an Accomplished One."
It's too bad that I read the ebook now, towards the end of my undergraduate career. I have a mere handful of tests and projects between me and my bachelor's degree. However, I intend to revisit Frank's book when I start graduate school next fall.
