Take Tests Study for your test I know this is very obvious, but it is necessary that you get used to genuinely studying. I would suggest that no matter how confident you are concerning the material, you should get in the habit of studying before tests. You can develop good study habits now, and figure out what works best for you.
I tend to cram for tests the night before. This is not the way to do it, but this is the habit I got into when I first started college. Why? I never really took all that many tests when I was homeschooled and so I never developed good study habits. When I started taking tests in college, I would just let myself procrastinate until the night before the test. I started this early, and it is the only study habit I have developed. Sooner or later it is going to catch up to me, so I suggest you develop good study habits while you can in the comfort of your own home.
Set a time and date for the test Go ahead and set a time a week in advance (or more) of when you are going to take the test. Say, for example, that your test is going to be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. In college, your test is going to be scheduled by your teacher. You cannot simply just take the test whenever you feel up to it (like I did). By setting a specific time and day when you are taking your test you are emulating the structured college setting. Start your test on time, as some professors will not admit people after class has started, especially on test day.
Limit the time of the test I encourage you to maintain a strict time limit. Have a reasonable amount of time for the material on the test you need to cover, but no more. Do not assign extravagant periods of time for a 20-question test, nor should you try to take a 50-question test in 20 minutes. A good jumping point is roughly a minute a question for multiple choice and true/false, two or three minutes per question for every short answer question, and anywhere from five to twenty five minutes for essay questions. Just add these up and you will have a fair idea of how long you should give yourself for a time limit. Enforcing a time limit will help you to learn aspects of time management and other test taking skills. |
