Essays, Essays, Essays In your college experience you will write essays. If you can get through college without writing a single essay you need to take a careful look at the quality of school you are attending. Regardless of your major you will almost certainly find yourself writing more essays than you would care to. Unfortunately, we are not all English majors, but through college everyone is going to be writing essays or reports, so you aren’t alone. As they say, practice makes perfect.
Start writing essays early and write them often during your homeschool years. You will encounter semester long projects requiring lengthy essays, short essays on tests, lab reports and probably all different manners of writing. According to the class you take, there will be different documentation standards. Also, different instructors will have different levels of expectations for your grammar mechanics. The key is to learn your grammar mechanics very early and then remember them.
A Necessary Reference One of the ‘references’ that you will probably encounter in college is The Modern Language Association of America (MLA) documentation. This is a standard, usually covered in English 101 and 102 (or any basic English course), that defines general guidelines for writing. Since many colleges / professors like to follow these guidelines, it is best that you get familiar with them early and practice them often. Knowing these guidelines will certainly help you in your English and Humanities courses and definitely give you an advanced warning of things to come and perhaps even an advantage over your peers.
