Homeschoolers Can Take PSAT as One Option

Standardized Tests
Take the PSAT

You can take a preliminary (or practice) SAT at a local high school or privateschool. This test is called the PSAT. You can take it in your sophomore or junior year although the test is geared to the junior level. It tests your basic ‘readin, writin, and rithmetic’ skills.

I signed up for the PSAT at a local privateschool and took it there. It is a good experience for the SAT and I would highly recommend it. It is very similar to the SAT and the results give you a good idea of how ready you are for the real thing. They also give you an indication of how you compare with others in your age group.

It is up to you whether you want to study for this or not. I went into the PSAT cold, having barely looked at a few practice questions. Since the score is relevant only in a few scholarships (like the National Merit Scholarship), it is not a big loss if you do not do well on the PSAT.

One other benefit, if you want to call it that, is that if you check the ‘correct’ box, you will start getting inundated with college brochures. This may help you gain some more insight on your career goals or college options.
