Homeschoolers Should Consider Getting a Job

Get A Job
Once you have found your preferred vocation you should consider getting some experience in that field since there simply is no better way to determine if you will really like doing that for a living or not. In addition, it will also give you valuable work experience (most places prefer to hire people with previous work experience) and, of course, you will make some money.

Most businesses would be more than happy to hire a homeschooler, especially if you let them know that you will be available to work daytime hours.

Try small businesses
Your dream job is probably not to be a cashier in a supermarket, which is usually the entry level job most places are going to offer you.

If you apply to a small business, odds are that you will have much more success in actually learning about the field in which you are interested.

Interested in accounting? Go to local accountants and see if any will give you an entry-level job. Let them know you are interested in doing accounting as a career and they might be even more interested. Interested in engineering? Look up some local engineers or engineering firms, see if they have any open positions for a hard-working high school kid who wants to learn.

Start your own business
While you are still living under someone else’s roof, you might as well take some entrepreneurial risk since there would be very few repercussions if things didn’t work out.

You could always do the basic things like mowing lawns, walking dogs, cleaning pools or babysitting kids. Or you could look into various opportunities across the Internet, especially if you are interested in computers or business management. You could design websites or try your hand at auctioning things on eBay. Whatever floats your boat, I would just recommend you try it while you don’t have to worry about supporting yourself on the income.

Volunteer
Again, if you have found some place that has no room to hire more people, you could always ask if you can volunteer there. Enjoy spending time at a favorite summer camp? See if they need any volunteers. Any experience you gain in volunteering can be gladly noted on college admission forms.
